SAAs at the Diavik Diamond Mine
On February 10-12th, 2015, Martin Zabel, one of Measurand’s Technicians travelled to
the Northwest Territories to help prepare for an upcoming SAA Installation in the Diavik
Diamond Mine, a joint venture of Rio Tinto and Dominion Diamond Corporation. These
SAAFs will be used to help monitor pit walls during excavation to ensure the stability of
these walls and the safety of the miners.
SAAFs are often installed in an existing inclinometer casing. In many cases the 27 mm
ID PVC conduit holding an SAAF can be grouted into the inclinometer casing even if it is
no longer usable for conventional inclinometer measurements. For installations in
undamaged inclinometer casing, the user has the option of grouting in or using
Measurand Centralizers, which bridge between 27 mm ID PVC and the inclinometer

SAA in Geotechnical News Magazine

“SAA represent an interesting alternative to a conventional INH. The installation
procedures for both types of instrument are similar as well as global accuracy although
the SAA appears less prone to systematic errors. However, the SAA provided significant
advantages over INH-01 due to easier and faster measurement, in situ checking and
data processing procedures. Simple automatic data acquisition and transmission options
are also available for the SAA which can alleviate accessibility problems and give more
flexibility in determining instrument reading frequency.”

Measurand's longest SAA Installation
The first of Measurand’s 150 meter long SAAs has been installed in one of the world’s largest tailings dams at Zelazny Most, Poland, October 2015. Previously, SAA had been available only up to 100 m long. The new length is accompanied by a doubling in pressure rating to 20 bar, or 200 m of water column. The SAA was installed by the "SAA + PVC" method, whereby both the SAA and its covering tube of 27 mm ID PVC are inserted into the borehole at the same time.
Landslide Monitoring with SAA and Vista Data Vision
In October 2014, a 6 metre long SAA was vertically installed to monitor the Šance-
Reèica Landslide in Czech Republic. This SAA was installed 50 cm from a former
inclinometer borehole that had been sheared off. SAA allowed for easy and rapid
installation, cost savings, and the ability to monitor large deformations automatically
using a logger and Vista Data Vision Software. This client was happy to be able
to access their data and graphs from a PC, smart phone, or tablet from any location

Is SAA really different from other Inclinometers?
Measurand has been helping geotechnical people solve their slope and structure
monitoring problems for over a decade. About ten years ago we installed the first SAAs
in California and New York State, making it possible to monitor slope stability in an
easier way, with greater survivability. Since then, we have provided over 65,000 meters of SAA to geotechnical projects around the world, and the orders keep coming in. What accounts for this wide acceptance of SAA?
SAAX1000 is an SAA with segments 1000 mm long, for use where cost reduction is important, and small deformations are expected. It is currently specified for horizontal use only, while beta testing of vertical installations proceeds. The waterproof construction includes robust joints of hydraulic hose connecting stainless steel tubes. Plated steel fittings are used. SAAX1000 is for use where curvatures are modest and/or casing is large enough to prevent bending of the longer segments. Spatial detail will of course be more limited than with shorter segments. Applications include settlement, rail line, and pipeline monitoring
Logger installations that have been collecting SAA data for a number of years can build up a significant amount of data, in some cases hundreds of megabytes.
Changes to our latest version of SAACR_raw2data include advances that speed up the time it takes to export data.
SAAs are built to a specific length for your project in our factory in Eastern Canada. All manufacturing is performed under an ISO 9001 Quality Assurance System to ensure proper calibration, pressure proofing, and temperature compensation.
It is possible to change the length, and/or to repair damaged SAAs in our factory, but there are some limitations. This article is intended to inform about which models can be repaired or modified, and to assist you in deciding whether to have us do so.
